This slide set begins by showing the silicon tetrahedron as the basic unit making up silicate minerals and proceeds to show how the unit fits together on the moleular scale to form the mineral. Further slides illustrate the fourteen types of space lattice of the six crystal systems including their axial angles and lengths. Also cleavage, luster, streak, hardness, birefringence, fracture, ferromagnetism, triangular diagrams of possible mixtures of pyroxenes, feldspars and olivines, several photomicrographs show rock forming minerals under plane polarization and crossed polaroids in several rock types.
